Faith’s birthday & Canada Day 2013

As you all know by now on our street and in our community we have a huge celebration for Canada Day that ends with fireworks. We are so thankful for great neighbours that like to work together to have fun. This year we had our celebration on Sunday, Jun 3o so that we don’t have to get up early the next morning to go to work. Good call.

The night before we painted the Canadian flag on the street like we do every year, this year we made the flag a bit bigger. It’s always fun painting the street with my neighbours.

Also we celebrated a special birthday for Faith as well. She turned 5. We had over all our friends and family that we love so much. Many of our close friends weren’t able to make it this year but it worked out great with Denita and her family coming over and DJ and Caitlyn. Faith just loves these guys. Hopefully next year we can have all those over that couldn’t make it. I guess I need to get the invitations out much earlier next year.

De-Ann outdid herself again with BBQ’d ribs, souvlaki and cupcakes for dessert. Everything was delicious. Each person brought over a salad and some dip, also delicious. Faith had her very own special cupcake with candles in it and everything.

Everyone gave Faith very special gifts. She rec’d a tent with finger puppets, necklace, bracelet and a ring (which she immediately put on and didn’t take off until she went to bed), word search and princess puzzle, and from us her very own bike (with training wheels). Unfortunately Faith wasn’t as enthused about the bike as I was but eventually she warmed up to riding it after DJ and I lowered the seat. It wasn’t until today (July 1) that she actually really rode it, but that’s another story and post.

This year our street was full everyone who lives on the street (almost everyone) invited their friends so we had more people on the street then every before. There was even some dancing going on, Faith and Shawn even got into it. I learned Faith and Shawn are quite the dancers, unfortunately.

It was so great to have other streets from our community join us for the celebration, especially at the end when we lit off the fireworks. Another great job by our organizers Ryan and John. Can’t wait for next year. Enjoy the pictures below.

Sunfish

As you know our kids have been taking swimming lesson for the past year. They have been to two sets of classes and moved from a Sea Otter to a Salamander and now they have completed their third set of classes and they have both graduated as Sunfish.

We always knew Faith was a fish and loved the water but never got that from Shawn because every time we go swimming or go to the splash pad he is content to sit just outside the water. However at swimming lesson he really rises to the occasion and when he isn’t being silly, he really swims. He can do his rocket ship, his front floats and his back floats and he is very good at diving for rings at the bottom of the pool (in the shallow end of course).

As I just said Faith is a natural and loves swimming, all kinds of swimming. She also enjoys jumping into the pool and loves diving for rings too. However she doesn’t like waiting. That’s the time she is always getting herself into trouble. She is constantly being told to “sit on her bum” by the swimming instructor. She just needs to be always swimming!

The last few lesson we have had Faith has said to her instructor that she wants to do everything by herself. Did I mention she is very independent, if not, she is.

All in all the kids had a very good season of swimming and they are looking forward to being Sunfish for this next season. Our goal as parents is to have the kids both be able to swim without supervision. And we both agree Faith will probably take it to the next level and become some kind of lifeguard!

Sun screen

This is a cute picture of what the kids did to combat the sun being in their eyes as we drove in the van. The blue blanket is Shawn and the red one is Faith. The blankets are from daycare and we take them home every weekend to wash so they are clean for Monday morning and the rest of the week. I just happened to have these blankets in the van.

Shawn & praying

Every night the kids and I (and De-Ann) have a number of things we do before we put the kids down to sleep. We call it the night time routine. One of those things is praying with the kids. When they were much younger either De-Ann or myself would pray now that they are older and understanding about praying, they both pray. We always hold hands with the kids as we pray and they know they need to close their eyes and be quiet when someone else is praying.

The other night as Shawn and I were praying and holding hands (as we usually do) he let go of one of my hands and next thing I know I am holding hands with one of his furry friends (Puppy). I momentarily opened my eyes and Shawn had taken his Puppy and put him between us where Shawn was holding one paw and I was holding the other. As to say “Puppy needs to pray too Daddy.”
