Genesis 32: Jacob wrestles with God

v.1-2, Jacob was on his way home and met up with angels from God. When he saw them he named the place Mahanaim (campground) and said “this is the camp of God.”

v.3-6, Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau to tell Esau that Jacob (his brother) has been living with Laban and has become very wealthy and is hoping he will find favour with you through this message. The messengers came back to Jacob and told him they delivered the message and now Esau is coming to meet…he has 400 men with him. [yikes!!!]

v.7-8, Jacob was [obviously] very scared and panicked by dividing his whole camp into 2. He figured if Esau attacks the 1st camp, Jacob could get away in the 2nd camp.

v.9-12, then [finally] Jacob prayed. The gist of the prayer was Jacob reminder God of his command to go back home. He also mentions how God has blessed him from nothing to 2 camps. But he asked God to save him from what Esau has in store for him and fulfill the promise to make him and his descendants like the sand of the seashores.

v.13-16, then Jacob went to bed. The next morning he put together a very elaborate gift for his brother Esau: 200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 female sheep, 20 rams, 30 female camels, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys and 10 male donkeys. He put a servant in charge of each herd put a huge space between each herd and told them to go way ahead of him.

v.17-21, Jacob instructed the LEAD servant as well all the other servants following him to tell Esau when he asks who all this belongs to? Tell him it is our master Jacob’s and it is a gift for you Esau. He is on his way, behind us. Jacob hoped the succession of gifts would soften up Esau, so that when Esau finally saw Jacob he would be glad to see him.

v.22-32, in the middle of the night Jacob got up and took his whole family, servants, possessions and got them to cross the shallow part of the Jabbok river, but Jacob stayed behind.

Then a “man” wrestled with Jacob until dawn. When the man saw he couldn’t win against Jacob he deliberately threw Jacob’s hip bone out of joint. Then the man told Jacob to let him go, but Jacob wouldn’t let him go until he was blessed! The man asked what his name was. He answered “Jacob.” And then asked what his name was. Then the “man” asked “why do you want to know my name?” and then he blessed Jacob.

Jacob called the place Peniel (Face of God) because he saw God’s face and lived to tell the story! The sun came up as Jacob left Peniel with a limp because of his hip. This is why the Israelites don’t eat the hip tendon/muscle even today.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? Like Jacob, my first reaction to a situation (usually bad) is to panic or take matters into my own hands. But it should be to pray!–which Jacob eventually did. Sometimes I NEVER do unfortunately.

Also like Jacob I need to be persistent in my request of God (as he wrestled until he has blessed). I need  to bring my requests to God until he answers. To not give up but pray and trust.

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? Pray, pray, pray…and trust God has something even better in store for me.
