Genesis 28:10-22: Jacob’s Dream

v.1-15, Jacob left Beersheba on his way to Haran. He stopped and camped for the night this time the sun had set (somewhere between his home and his destination–“a certain place”). He took a stone for a pillow and lay down to sleep.

His dream: a STAIRWAY set on the earth reached all the way to Heaven (sky). ANGELS were going UP & DOWN the stairway. God appeared standing above the stairway and said

“I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give the land on which you are lying to you and your descendants. Your descendants will be like the dust on the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Through you and through your descendant every family on earth will be blessed. Remember, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. I will also bring you back to this land because I will not leave you until I do what I’ve promised you.” (GWT)

v.16-17, Jacob woke up and said “Certainly, the Lord is in this place, and I didn’t know it!” and filled with awe he said “How awe-inspiring this place is! Certainly, this is the house of God and the gateway to heaven!” (GWT)

v.18-19, Early the next morning Jacob woke up and took the stone he had used as his pillow and stood it up as a memorial pillar and poured oil over it. He named the place BETHEL (God’s House). The name of the town had been Luz until then.

v.20-22, Jacob made a vow: “If God will be with me and will watch over me on my trip and give me food to eat and clothes to wear, and if I return safely to my father’s home, then the Lordwill be my God. This stone that I have set up as a marker will be the house of God, and I will surely give you a *tenth of everything you give me.” (GWT) *first mention of tithe

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? God keeps keeping his promise to Abraham’s descendants and as you can see he constantly is reminding each of Abraham’s descendants of his promise. I think this shows the trustworthiness of God to keep his promise even when we don’t clearly deserve it. All of Abraham’s descendants including Abraham have lied and deceived (sinned) but yet God says he will still keep his promise to bless the nations through Abraham’s family.

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? Pray and trust God will fulfill his promise in me!

God, whatever you want me to do, please make it so clear to me I can’t miss it. Thank you.
