My first wedding

It’s been a couple months since I ventured into a brand new aspect of being a pastor. For those of you who don’t know, I have been in ministry as a pastor for quite a while (but who’s counting). Anyway, last Wednesday night I did my very first wedding rehearsal. It was a bit shaky but we got through it after two tries. Hey, no one gets it right the first time, do they? After the rehearsal I had a great visit with the bride and groom to-be’s families. It was great hanging out and getting to know each of the family members.

On Friday, July 9, 2010 I did my first wedding. With the help of some great musicians, another pastor, the wedding party and of course the almost newlyweds the whole ceremony went off without a hitch.

I learned very quickly how to put together a wedding ceremony from start to finish. How to write a ceremony and how to execute it. I even learned how to speak briefly when it came to the message (or homily). It was a great experience and I look forward to my next chance to do another wedding.

The other part of doing a wedding was the pre-marriage counselling which I thoroughly enjoyed. Some of the things we discussed was the couple’s expectations of each other which was an eye opener for all involved. Other topics we discussed were money, communication and goals. Among other things I got the couple to interview a couple who has been married for at least 3 years. Then we spent a good bit of time unpacking what they learned. The counselling was a great experience and I hope the happy couple are better prepared for their marriage in the future.

I want to especially thank Pastor Marcelle, Grant & my older brother, Paul for your consultation on how to properly and lawfully put together a wedding ceremony. And I also want to thank Earl & Emily for trusting me with the opportunity to do their wedding…as my first!
