Day 14…Genesis 20:

Genesis 20: Abraham lies about Sarah AGAIN! (Ch 12)

v.1-2, MEANWHILE… Abraham travelled away from the region of Negev and settled between Kadesh & Shur. And again Abraham told the same lie about Sarah, that she was his sister (not his wife).

v.3-7, King Abimelech of Gerar took Sarah to be his own. God came to Abimelech in a dream and told that Sarah was married in her kept her or touched her he would die. He had not slept with her or touched her so he pleaded with God not to kill him besides Abraham lied to him and she agreed. God replied back to he knew Abimelech had good intentions and that’s why God kept him from sinning. But he told Abimelech to give back Sarah to Abraham he’s a prophet and he will pray for you and if you don’t give her back you and your family will die!

v.8-13, Abimelech woke up 1st thing that morning and told all his servants the whole dream. They were shocked. He called Abraham and told him off for lying and asked why he would do such a thing to Abimelech and his kingdom. Abraham defended himself by saying he was afraid they would take his wife and kill him because of how beautiful Sarah is. Besides she really was his 1/2 sister.

v.14-16, Abimelech gave Sarah back to Abraham along with a some cattle and sheep and servants and told them to go live anywhere they wanted. Abimelech told Sarah “I’ve given you brother (husband) 1000 pieces of silver that clears you of even a shadow of suspicion before the eyes of the world. You’re vindicated!”

v.17-18, then Abraham prayed to God to heal Abimelech and his family and servants–they were able to have babies again! God had shut down every womb in Abimelech’s household because he had Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? Another LIE or deception to protect or get your own way. God has a plan and we seem to think our idea or plan is better so we go ahead and execute it without God’s go ahead. Abraham could have told the truth and trusted God to protect him and Sarah but he lied and God had to step in (through a dream) to protect Abimelech —> not God’s plan but he allowed it!

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? Listen, listen, listen — to God and obey his plan.

God, please make our next move crystal clear and I won’t do anything until you make it clear and it is your plan.

Day 13…Genesis 19:30-38:

Genesis 19: Lot & his daughters

v.30, Lot left the little town of Zoar and went into the mountains to live with his 2 daughter in a cave. He was afraid to live in Zoar because it wasn’t safe.

v.31-32, the older daughter speaking to the younger, realized that their dad was getting old and there were no men in sight to keep their family line alive. So she suggested the get Lot drunk and each of them sleep with him to have children…only way to keep their family line alive.

v.33-35, the got Lot drunk and the oldest daughter slept with him. He was oblivious. The next morning the oldest daughter reported back to the younger and told her tonight was her turn. So that night they got him drunk and she slept with him too.

v.36-38, their acts of incest produced 2 sons. Older daughter had MOAB (ancestor of the Moabites) and the younger had BEN-AMMI (ancestor of the Ammorites).

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? Goes back to the lesson of not taking matters into my own hands. These 2 daughters chose to sleep (have incest) with their dad to keep their family name alive but they could have simply asked God…or even moved back to the small town. They could have done many RIGHT things instead of sinning against their dad and God! God ALLOWS us to do what we want even if it isn’t his BEST for us.

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? I have to learn from these daughters’ mistakes and ask God for direction. To not do anything until God gives it. Not take things into my own hands unfortunately as these daughters did.

God, please help me to have the wisdom and courage to wait especially if I think I have the right solution or think I know what is right in my eyes or what will make me happy.

Day 12…Genesis 18:16-19:29:

Genesis 18: Abraham pleads for Sodom & Gomorrah

v.16-19, As the men were leaving they walked towards Sodom and Abraham tagged along to say good-bye. The Lord said

“shall I hide from Abraham what I am going to do, since he is going to be a great nation and all nations will be blessed through him? I have decided that he is going to be the one to train his children and future household to observe God’s way of life, live kindly, generously, and fairly, so that God can complete in Abraham what he promised!”

v.20-21, Lord told Abraham the outcry of the victims in Sodom & Gomorrah are deafening and their sins are GREVIOUS! He is going to see for himself what they’re doing is as bad as the cries, then I will know.

v.22, the 3 men set off for Sodom but Abraham stood in their way then he started a conversation that led to saving Lot & his daughter.

v.23-33, Abraham pleads for Sodom. He says “are you serious? Are you going to destroy the GOOD with the BAD? What if there is 50 good (righteous)?” God told him he would spare everyone for the sake of 50. Then 45, then 40, then 30, then 20. Finally TEN! This time Abraham said “don’t be angry, will you spare the whole city for 1o good?” God said he would and then he left. Now there are only 2 men…

Genesis 19:1-29: Sodom & Gomorrah are DESTROYED!

v.1-3, the two men (or angels) arrived at Sodom in the evening and Lot was sitting at the gate. He got up and went to meet them. He begged them to stay the night at his house, wash their feet and be refreshed and then be on their way the next morning. But they refused and told him they would rather sleep in the street. Lot insisted so they finally relented and went with Lot. Lot fixed a hot meal for them to eat.

v.4-5, before they had gotten to bed the men (young & old) from all over the city surrounded the house and yelled to Lot to bring them out so they can have sex with them.

v.6-8, Lot went out to them and locked the door behind them and begged them to not be so vile and even offered his 2 virgin daughter instead of his guest (shocking how sinful Lot is!)

v.9-11, they told Lot to get lost and told him off for telling them how to live their life, it was none of his business as an outsider. They threatened that they would treat him worse than they will his guests. Then they charged past Lot  to break down the door but  men (angels) reached outside and grabbed Lot, pulled him inside and locking the door and struck the men with BLINDNESS!

v.12-14, the 2 men (angels) asked Lot if there were anyone else in the city that were his family? “Get them out now, we’re going to destroy the city! The outcries of the innocent have reached God and we are here to destroy this place.” Lot went to  warn his daughter’s finacees BUT they thought he was joking and ignored him.

v.15-17, at daybreak the 2 men (angels) pushed Lot to leave with his *wife and *2 daughters. “Hurry up” before it is too late and you’re caught in the punishment of this terrible city.” Lot was dragging his feet so the men grabbed him and his *family and dragged them to safety outside the city. When they arrived outside the city the men (angels) told Lot and his family to “RUN for the HILLS” or they would be destroyed along with the rest of the city.

v.18-22, again Lot protested he knew they liked him so he told them he didn’t want to run for the mountains because he was concerned something terrible (die) was going to happen there, so he suggested a small town (Zoar) nearby instead. They agreed and told Lot they wouldn’t destroy the little town, again they told him to run because they can’t do anything until Lot got there.

v.23-26, by the time Lot reached Zoar the sun had risen and God rained down brimstone and fire on Sodom & Gomorrah — destroyed everything!!! Unfortunately Lot’s wife looked back and turned to a PILLAR OF SALT!

v.27-29, early the next morning Abraham got up and looked to where Sodom & Gomorrah used to be and all he could see was smoke rising from the ground like a furnace. This is the story of God destroying Sodom & Gomorrah but still saving Abraham’s family, Lot,before he destroyed Lot’s sinful home.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? God is a merciful God who wants to save those who believe (or follow), even when he is ready to destroy our home or livelihood (job, career). He still loves me and my family and will faithfully take care of us (saves us).

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? Trust that God has my best interest in mind. That God knows what’s best and will lead me there. I just need to be faithful and listen carefully. Even when I don’t understand–like the way he destroyed Lot’s home.

Day 11…Genesis 18:1-15:

Genesis 18:1-15: Lord & 2 men visit Abraham

v.1-8, During the hottest part of the day and Abraham looked up he saw 3 men (one of which was the Lord) standing nearby him, he ran to them bowed before them. He asked them to stop and rest, he could wash their feet and feed them and then they could be on their way. Abraham hurried into the tent and told Sarah to hurry up and make bread (out of 3 of the best flour). Then he ran to get a calf to prepare for the 3 visitors. He set everything before the men and stood there under the Great tree of Mamre while they ate.

v.9-15, The men asked where Sarah was and of course Abraham told them she was in the tent. Then the Lord he will return this time next year and Sarah will have a son. Sarah was listening at the tent’s entrance behind the men. Sarah was past the age of child bearing and Abraham was very old as well. So Sarah LAUGHED when she heard she was going to have a son especially with an old guy like Abraham! Then the Lord asked Abraham why Sarah laughed? “Is there anything too hard for God?” Then the Lord said again that Sarah will have a son this time next year. Sarah denied she laughed because she was afraid. But the Lord said “yes you did.”

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? Simply we need to trust God when he says he is going to do something, especially if he tells me over and over again. Like he did about their son Issac. Also don’t doubt God either!

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? I need to continue to ask — pray! And then listen. In the past I have gone through doors that seemed open but this time I am going to do less DOING and more LISTENING!

God, please help me to wait on you and listen

First Sunday w/o Pastor Deric

First I want to thank Pastor Deric for his trust in me as he is on holidays (a much deserved break). I hope he has a fantastic 2nd week off next week. Hopefully this will actually be a relaxing time.

We were blessed to have a guest speaker at City Centre today and Pastor Aaron and myself shared the duties of announcements, intro, prayer, etc. At first it was nerve racking not having our fearless leader with us, but we ended up enjoying our interaction with the congregation. I am so honoured to be part of a church family that sincerely cares about each other–literally a family.

Thank you God for this assignment and for your guidance in our lives!

Day 10…Genesis 17:

Genesis 17: God’s covenant honoured | circumcision

v.1-8, God showed up to Abram and reminded him of his covenant saying “I will give you a huge family.” Abram was overwhelmed by the news that he fell on his face. God again said “you’ll be the father of many nations – father of fathers – kings will come from you – this covenant is forever…” God promised not only that Abram would have many children but the land he was living on is his as well (Canaan) forever!      ….v.3, Abram name was changed to Abraham

v.9-14, God told Abram he must honour the covenant by having all the males in his household CIRCUMCISED (cutting off foreskin of penis–sign of God’s permanent covenant between God and his descendants). Every male baby for now on will be circumcised at 8 days old. This includes not only his own children but also non-blood kin, slaves, any male brought into his family from the inside. Any UNCIRCUMCISED male will be cut off from Abram’s people–he has broken the covenant.

v.15-16, Sarai will no longer be called Sarah. God said “I will bless her and I’ll give you [Abram] a son by her.” Nations will come from her & kings will come from her.

v.17, Abraham fell flat on his face and LAUGHED at the thought. “Can a 100 yr old man have a child? And can Sarah 90 yrs old have a baby?”

v.18-19, then Abraham said to God “let Ishmael be my heir.” But God told him that isn’t what he meant, Sarah will have a child, a son name him ISSAC (laughter). God then said he is going to establish his covenant with Issac and his descendants that lasts forever.

v.20-22, God then told Abraham he will bless Ishmael, he will be the father of 12 princes & he will be a great nation. BUT God said he will make his promise to Issac and this time next year Sarah will give birth to him.

v.23-27, Abraham and his son Ishmael (& all the other males in his household) and circumcised them, just as God had told him to do. Abraham was 99 & Ishamael was 13 when they were circumcised — same day.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? I think God is saying I have to play a part in his will (covenant) with me. I have to do MY PART. Live my life honouring God, pray and spend time developing my relationship with him.

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? I covenant today, no matter what, from this day forward God, I will put aside this time each morning with you. No matter how tired I am I will spend this time with you developing our relationship.

God, please hold me to this covenant!
