Genesis 20: Abraham lies about Sarah AGAIN! (Ch 12)
v.1-2, MEANWHILE… Abraham travelled away from the region of Negev and settled between Kadesh & Shur. And again Abraham told the same lie about Sarah, that she was his sister (not his wife).
v.3-7, King Abimelech of Gerar took Sarah to be his own. God came to Abimelech in a dream and told that Sarah was married in her kept her or touched her he would die. He had not slept with her or touched her so he pleaded with God not to kill him besides Abraham lied to him and she agreed. God replied back to he knew Abimelech had good intentions and that’s why God kept him from sinning. But he told Abimelech to give back Sarah to Abraham he’s a prophet and he will pray for you and if you don’t give her back you and your family will die!
v.8-13, Abimelech woke up 1st thing that morning and told all his servants the whole dream. They were shocked. He called Abraham and told him off for lying and asked why he would do such a thing to Abimelech and his kingdom. Abraham defended himself by saying he was afraid they would take his wife and kill him because of how beautiful Sarah is. Besides she really was his 1/2 sister.
v.14-16, Abimelech gave Sarah back to Abraham along with a some cattle and sheep and servants and told them to go live anywhere they wanted. Abimelech told Sarah “I’ve given you brother (husband) 1000 pieces of silver that clears you of even a shadow of suspicion before the eyes of the world. You’re vindicated!”
v.17-18, then Abraham prayed to God to heal Abimelech and his family and servants–they were able to have babies again! God had shut down every womb in Abimelech’s household because he had Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? Another LIE or deception to protect or get your own way. God has a plan and we seem to think our idea or plan is better so we go ahead and execute it without God’s go ahead. Abraham could have told the truth and trusted God to protect him and Sarah but he lied and God had to step in (through a dream) to protect Abimelech —> not God’s plan but he allowed it!
WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? Listen, listen, listen — to God and obey his plan.
God, please make our next move crystal clear and I won’t do anything until you make it clear and it is your plan.
